Course Description

The EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems for Buildings provides structured training in the recommendations contained within BS 5839-1:2025. BS 5839-1 applies to fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises. It provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of these systems.

During the course, learners will develop the ability to interpret and navigate the standard and understand how its recommendations apply to different types of premises and fire alarm systems.

The programme covers system categories, detector selection, alarm devices, zoning, power supplies, cabling, monitoring, commissioning, certification, maintenance and measures designed to limit false alarms.

This is a regulated Level 3 qualification awarded by EAL and supported by the Fire and Security Association.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal academic entry requirements specified by EAL. However, learners should have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to understand the course material and complete the Level 3 assessment. Because this is a technical Level 3 qualification, previous electrical, fire alarm or building services experience is strongly recommended. Learners should ideally be: 

  •  A qualified or practising electrician 
  • Working within the fire detection and alarm industry 
  • An electrical or building services engineer 
  • Responsible for fire alarm design, installation, commissioning or maintenance 
  • Seeking to develop specialist fire alarm knowledge

Qualification and Assessment

  • The qualification consists of one mandatory unit covering the requirements for fire detection and fire alarm systems in buildings.
  • Learners are assessed through an EAL on-screen multiple-choice examination. The qualification is graded on a pass or fail basis.
  • Candidates must successfully pass the examination to receive the EAL Level 3 Award.
  • The assessment tests the learner’s knowledge and understanding of BS 5839-1:2025 and their ability to apply its recommendations to fire detection and fire alarm systems.
