Course Description

This EAL Level 3 Award provides structured training in the application of BS 5266-1:2025 and the supporting standards governing emergency escape lighting and standby lighting.

Learners will examine how emergency lighting systems are selected and designed for different premises and risks, including escape routes, open areas, high-risk task areas and locations requiring particular consideration.

The programme explains system types, luminaires, signs, illumination requirements, duration, circuit arrangements, installation practices, commissioning, certification, inspection, testing and maintenance.

By completing the course, learners will strengthen their ability to interpret the relevant standards and apply them to realistic emergency lighting projects.

This is a regulated Level 3 qualification awarded by EAL and developed with industry input from Zzeus and the British Fire Consortium.

Entry Requirements

Learners should have sufficient literacy and numeracy skills to understand the technical course material and complete the Level 3 assessment.
Because this is a technical Level 3 qualification, previous electrical, emergency lighting or building services experience is strongly recommended.
Learners should ideally be:
  • A qualified or practising electrician
  • An electrical designer or inspector
  • An emergency lighting installer
  • A facilities, property maintenance or building services professional
  • Responsible for emergency lighting design, installation, commissioning or maintenance
  • Seeking to develop specialist knowledge of BS 5266-1

Qualification and Assessment

The qualification is a short Level 3 Award with seven guided learning hours.
Learners complete an EAL-set, centre-marked controlled knowledge assessment. The qualification is graded on a pass or fail basis.

Candidates must successfully complete the controlled assessment to receive the EAL Level 3 Award.

The assessment tests the learner’s understanding of the application of BS 5266-1 and the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency lighting systems.
