Course Description

The EAL Level 3 Award in the Commissioning, Handover and Servicing of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems to BS 5839-1 provides structured knowledge and practical training in inspection, servicing,
commissioning and handover activities to BS 5839-1.
Learners develop a structured approach to checking that an installed system operates as intended, identifying and recording defects or variations, completing the appropriate documentation and explaining system operation to the responsible person.

Training combines underpinning knowledge with practical skills relevant to the activities carried out by commissioning and service engineers.

The programme covers pre-commissioning checks, inspection and testing, cause-and-effect operation, interfaces, power supplies, fault monitoring, certificates, handover records, user instruction and periodic servicing.

This is a regulated Level 3 qualification awarded by EAL and supported by the Fire and Security Association (FSA).

Qualification and Assessment

The qualification covers the understanding and practical skills required to inspect, service, commission and hand over fire detection and alarm systems to BS 5839-1.

Assessment includes knowledge and practical assessment arranged by the approved centre in accordance with EAL requirements. The qualification is graded on a pass or fail basis.

Candidates must successfully complete all required assessment components to receive the EAL Level 3 Award.

Assessment confirms the learner’s understanding and their ability to apply appropriate inspection,
commissioning, handover and servicing procedures in practical scenarios.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 18 years old. They should also have sufficient literacy, numeracy and technical understanding to complete Level 3 knowledge and practical assessments.
Because this is a specialist technical qualification, relevant electrical, fire alarm or building services experience is strongly recommended.

Learners should ideally be:

A qualified or practicing electrician
Working within the fire detection and alarm industry
An electrical or building services engineer
Responsible for fire alarm design, installation, commissioning or maintenance
Seeking to develop specialist fire alarm knowledge
