Course Description

The EAL Level 3 Award in the Requirements for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems in Dwellings provides structured training in the recommendations contained within BS 5839-6:2019+A1:2020.

BS 5839-6 provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems in domestic premises. This includes houses, flats, maisonettes and certain houses in multiple occupation, subject to the scope of the standard and the relevant fire risk assessment.

Qualification and Assessment

  • The qualification consists of one mandatory unit: FDD3-01 – Understand the Requirements for Fire Detection and Alarm Systems in Dwellings.
  • The qualification has 22 guided learning hours and a Total Qualification Time of 24 hours. Learners are assessed through an EAL on-screen multiple-choice examination and the qualification is graded on a pass or fail basis.
  • The examination contains 45 questions, allows 80 minutes and has a pass mark normally set at 60%.
  • Candidates must successfully pass the examination to receive the EAL Level 3 Award.
  • The assessment tests the learner’s knowledge and understanding of legislation, fire risk assessment, design, installation, commissioning, certification and maintenance of fire detection and alarm systems in dwellings.
