Course Overview

The EAL Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Electrical Energy Storage Systems is designed for competent electricians who want to develop specialist knowledge and skills associated with EESS, typically in a dwelling.

The qualification covers system principles, batteries, statutory requirements, specification and design, installation, inspection, testing, commissioning and customer handover. It follows BS 7671, the IET Code
of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems and relevant industry guidance.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 18 years old and must already be competent electricians. This is an upskilling qualification, not an entry route into electrical installation.

Before registration, candidates must provide evidence of appropriate core electrotechnical competence in line with EAL’s current requirements. This may include an accepted Level 3 electrotechnical qualification and relevant practical achievement, or an appropriate current ECS Gold Card route.

Learners should have current knowledge of BS 7671 and suitable inspection, testing and certification competence. CBWA will review qualifications and experience before confirming enrolment.

Qualification and Assessment

The qualification contains one unit covering the knowledge, understanding and related practical skills involved in designing, installing and commissioning electrical energy storage systems in a domestic dwelling context.
Assessment normally includes:

  • One invigilated EAL online multiple-choice knowledge test
  • One practical assignment assessed in simulated conditions
  • Inspection, testing, commissioning and handover documentation
  • Assessor questioning or supplementary evidence where required

Candidates must successfully complete all required assessment components to receive the EAL Level 3 Award.
