Course Overview

This combined programme brings together two complementary EAL Level 3 qualifications for competent
electricians:
 EAL Level 3 Award in the Installation of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems – 600/5175/9
 EAL Level 3 Award in the Design, Installation and Commissioning of Electrical Energy Storage Systems
– 610/2091/6

Learners develop the knowledge and practical skills associated with installing and commissioning small- scale solar PV systems, then extend their capability into the design, specification, installation and
commissioning of electrical energy storage systems, typically in dwellings.

Training is delivered at CBWA’s purpose-built electrical training centre in Coventry by industry- experienced electrical and low-carbon technology tutors.

Programme Description

 The programme provides a structured route through two closely related technologies. The Solar PV award covers the installation, inspection, testing, commissioning and handover of small-scale photovoltaic systems. The EESS award covers the design, specification, installation, inspection, testing, commissioning and handover of electrical energy storage systems.

Together, the awards help qualified electricians understand how generation and storage technologies operate individually and as part of an integrated installation. Training addresses system selection, electrical design, safe installation, protection, testing, documentation, customer handover and relevant industry guidance.

Both awards are specialist upskilling qualifications. Candidates must already possess suitable core
electrotechnical competence before registration.

Qualifications Included

1. Small-Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems – 600/5175/9
A Level 3 award combining knowledge and performance units for the installation of small-scale solar PV systems, including typical dwelling installations.

2. Electrical Energy Storage Systems – 610/2091/6
A Level 3 award covering knowledge, understanding and some practical skills associated with designing, specifying, installing and commissioning EESS, typically in a dwelling.

Entry Requirements

Learners must be at least 18 years old and must already be competent electricians. This programme is intended for low-carbon technology upskilling and is not an entry route into the electrical industry.
Before registration, candidates must provide evidence of accepted core electrotechnical competence in line with the current EAL and EAS requirements. This may include an appropriate Level 3 electrotechnical qualification with relevant practical achievement, or a suitable current ECS Gold Card route. 
Learners should have current BS 7671 knowledge and suitable inspection, testing and certification competence. CBWA will review qualifications and experience before confirming enrolment on either award.

  • The current IET Code of Practice for Grid-Connected Solar Photovoltaic Systems 
  • The current IET Code of Practice for Electrical Energy Storage Systems
  • Access to the current edition of BS 7671 and relevant guidance
  • A non-programmable scientific calculator
  • Suitable workwear, safety footwear and specified PPE for practical sessions
  • Suitable stationery and note-taking materials
  • Photographic identification for examinations
