What do we offer?

These qualifications are bundled together in our Gold NVQ Electrical Training Package for those completely new to the industry, with no experience whatsoever. They are the industry recognised route to becoming a Gold card holder under the JIB scheme. The qualifications are designed to allow the student to work on building sites as well as domestic, commercial and industrial settings, becoming a fully qualified electrician.

These courses are a blended mix of both theory and practical (approximately 50% classroom-based and 50% practical) and are designed for individuals with little or no electrical industry knowledge and will start teaching right from the basics (how to fit back boxes using a drill and raw plugs, how to fit simple lighting circuits, ring final circuits and consumer units etc.), all the way through to the high end techniques (bending conduits, creating angled bends in cable tray and trunking etc.). Thus, throughout the course you will learn all of the hidden tips of the trade and how to confidently fully carry out domestic, industrial and commercial electrics.

NVQ Portfolio Assignments

Schedule & Duration:

  • Monday – Friday (9:00am – 4:30pm, breaks included)

These five courses consist of 14 weeks full-time teaching, but can always be staggered to fit around your work commitments.

Equipment & Facilities

We provide you with your own training bays & equipment (can bring your own tools & equipment if preferred, e.g. your own calibrated multifunction tester)

You will have access to:

  • Kitchen facilities (fridge, microwave etc.)
  • Free tea & coffee
  • Parking

We are located in CV7 9NH, just off the M6 motorway and close to several food places and hotels nearby.

Course Information

Here at Central Building & Welding Academy we deliver the EAL Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations. This qualification allows the learner to acquire the basic knowledge and craft skills of electrical installations. The course does not require occupational evidence from within the work place, so is suitable for learners who do not work within the industry. 

The Level 2 Diploma has five mandatory units, which between them cover:
  • Heath and Safety 
  • Electrical Installation Theory and Technology 
  • Electrical Installation Methods
  • Procedures and Requirements
  • Electrical Installation Craft Skills
  • Electrical Science Principles

Also included within the course structure we deliver the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment. This qualification allows the learner to build up on their previous knowledge based units acquired within the Level 2 Diploma and also build further knowledge and craft skills with the addition of further mandatory units. 

The Level 3 mandatory knowledge units that you cover are:
  • Health and Safety 
  • Understanding environmental legislation working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems
  • Understanding the practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment
  • Understanding the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Understanding the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems
  • Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Understanding the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems

During the course you will also complete your 18th Edition (2382-22), Building Regulations (2393-10 )and the Initial Periodic Inspection and Testing Course (2391-52)


On completion of this, candidates will be able to gain their improvers status and will be able to further their career options by working in the electrical industry to build up a portfolio which will help for their mandatory performance based units. 

 The following units listed is what you will be required to complete for your NVQ Portfolio.
  • Applying health and safety legislation and working practices
  • Applying environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems
  • Overseeing and organising the work environment
  • Planning, preparing and installing wiring systems and associated equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Terminating and connecting conductors and cables in electrical systems
  • Inspecting, testing, commissioning and certifying electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • The final unit will be the AM2 Electrotechnical Occupational Competence, which you will be required to book separately, and is required to complete your NVQ


On completing the course you will now be a fully qualified electrician and eligible for your ECS gold card.

Additional Information

 For additional information on the content of the units, and what the courses entail as a whole, feel free to check the courses out separately: Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations and Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrical Installations.

Upon completion of these, you will undertake two more weeks of training where you will pass the 18th Edition City & Guilds (2382),  
City & Guilds Building Regulations Part P (2393 – 10) and Inspection & Testing City & Guilds (2391-52). These are mandatory for you to join a competent person scheme such as the NICEIC or NAPPIT, also for an employee of an electrical contractor to conduct EIC or EICR.

All of the above modules will be carried out here at our purpose built, dedicated training centre where we have various simulated training bays for you to carry out your practical assignments. We also have our own computer suite linked to EAL for you to take all of your online tests.
